Private High Volume Tendon Injections (HVTI)

Joint Care Clinics provides private high volume tendon injections in clinics across the UK. High-voltage tendon irradiation (HVTI) is a minimally invasive procedure that treats chronic tendon injuries, including tendinopathy. The procedure involves injecting a large volume of saline, often combined with a small amount of local anaesthetic and corticosteroid, into the area around the damaged tendon.

The procedure aims to relieve pain and discomfort, reduce inflammation, and encourage healing by mechanically distending the tendon sheath and triggering a tissue healing response.

Why Choose Joint Care Clinics?

Joint Care Clinics are HCPC-registered and members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. and the Society of Radiographers. We offer a one-stop clinic for consultation, diagnostic scans and treatment. This service is offered by highly experienced clinicians. We use an ultrasound diagnostic scanner to pinpoint the area of pain, for a more accurate diagnosis and tailor-made treatment.

What conditions are treated with High Volume Tendon Injections (HVTI)

Doctors will refer patients for high-voltage tendon injection (HVTI) if conservative treatment fails to resolve persistent tendinopathies. Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy (also known as jumper’s knee), tennis elbow (also known as lateral epicondylitis), and gluteal tendinopathy are common conditions that will benefit from HVTI.

Other chronic tendon conditions, such as persistent inflammation and discomfort that do not respond to rest or physiotherapy, may also benefit from its use.

High Volume Tendon Injections (HVTI) Faqs

How does HVTI work?

HVTI’s primary mechanism is the mechanical separation of neovessels (new, often painful blood vessels) and nerve fibers that grow into the tendon during chronic tendinopathy.

By injecting a large amount of fluid, the pressure disrupts these structures, leading to pain relief. Additionally, the procedure can help stretch the tendon sheath, minimising friction while encouraging healing.

What should I expect during the procedure?

We typically carry out HVTI under ultrasound guidance to ensure precise injection administration. The procedure takes around thirty to forty-five minutes. The injection may cause pressure or discomfort, but not too much. We administer a local anaesthetic to relieve the discomfort during the procedure.

What is the recovery like following HVTI?

The majority of people can go home straight away following the procedure. Feeling pain or discomfort in the treated area for a few days is normal, but this typically fades off quickly. We advise patients to refrain from strenuous activities for a few days to facilitate the tendon’s healing process.

We may advise a rehabilitation program, often involving physiotherapy, to promote faster healing and prevent recurrence.

Do I need a follow-up appointment?

Your clinician will discuss the findings with you at your follow-up appointment, and outline the next steps in your care plan based on the results.
