Private Calcific Barbotage Treatment in Leicestershire

Joint Care Clinic in Leicestershire offers private Barbotage treatment for calcific supraspinatus tendinopathy (a type of rotator cuff tendinopathy) in the UK. This is a minimally invasive procedure performed in outpatient clinics.

Calcific supraspinatus tendinopathy is a chronic shoulder condition where calcium deposits form in the tendons attached to the bone, which may increase in size over time. This leads to significant shoulder pain and restricted shoulder movement, particularly when lifting the arm sideways (abduction). The supraspinatus tendon, part of the rotator cuff, is the most commonly affected tendon.
Once symptoms develop, they often respond poorly to conventional treatments. If symptoms persist for several weeks, the Barbotage procedure may be a suitable treatment option. This minimally invasive procedure is conducted in outpatient clinics.

Why Choose Joint Care Clinics?

Joint Care Clinics are HCPC-registered and members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. and the Society of Radiographers. We offer a one-stop clinic for consultation, diagnostic scans and treatment. This service is offered by highly experienced clinicians. We use an ultrasound diagnostic scanner to pinpoint the area of pain, for a more accurate diagnosis and tailor-made treatment.

What is the Calcific Barbotage Injection Procedure?

Once the treatment area is numbed with local anaesthesia, a needle is guided to the centre of the calcification under ultrasound guidance. Using a combination of local anaesthesia (to ensure comfort) and saline solution, pressure is applied to the calcification to break it down and liquefy it. The liquefied calcium is then aspirated into a syringe, called Lavage. Lavage may not be possible at all times, this depends on the type and shape of the deposited calcification.
Afterwards, a steroid/cortisone is injected into the shoulder bursa to aid in recovery and reduce inflammation. The use of ultrasound ensures precise needle placement and maximizes the procedure’s effectiveness.

What happens during the Calcific Barbotage procedure?

After the initial consultation and an ultrasound scan to confirm and locate the calcium deposits, we conduct a safety questionnaire to assess suitability for the procedure. If appropriate, the Barbotage procedure can be performed during the same initial appointment.
At the start of the procedure, we clean and numb the target area with a local anaesthetic. Sterile gel is then applied to enable the clinician to use an ultrasound transducer to obtain clear images/view of the target area.
Using real-time ultrasound guidance, our clinicians can accurately locate the calcium deposit and guide the needle into the centre of the calcification to liquify or break it into smaller fragments, which are then aspirated when possible. You may experience some pressure or discomfort during the procedure. If the calcium is relatively soft, a saline solution is used to liquefy and aspirate the deposit as much as possible.
Finally, a steroid or cortisone injection is administered into the bursa to help reduce inflammation. The entire procedure typically takes around 40 to 60 minutes.

Will it hurt?

You may feel pressure or discomfort during parts of the treatment. Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using local anaesthesia.

What happens after returning home?

We recommend that you bring someone with you to the clinic for the Barbotage and Lavage procedure, as they can drive you home afterward.
For the first two days, apply ice packs as often as possible, for 10 minutes at a time. Avoid any activities that aggravate the pain and gradually return to your normal routine. We advise two weeks of relative rest, and avoid lifting/pulling/pushing through the treated shoulder. You may continue to take any regular pain relief medications. It is normal to experience discomfort for a few days after the procedure, as your body absorbs the calcium and begins the healing process.

While calcific barbotage is a highly effective and minimally invasive procedure, there is a minor risk of allergic reactions, infection, or a brief pain flare-up that can occur immediately or within a few days of the procedure with all treatments.

Do I need a follow-up appointment?

You might need a follow-up appointment with your referral.

If the calcium deposit reappears in the cuff tendon, you may require another procedure.

"Having played professional sport from 1989-2008, I’ve amassed plenty of aches and pains after numerous operations. I’ve been around the world and seen some of the best Doctors and surgeons out there, and Ram has been right up there with his care and skill. Never in a rush, he’s kind, compassionate and very professional. Not only helped me with knee and shoulder pain, but he’s also treated my wife for elbow pain. My son is now going to see him as he’s seen a difference in how his parents are moving. Thanks for all your help, Darren Gough and Anna Gough"
