Joint Care Clinic offers private cortisone injections in Rugby for people seeking expert help with painful, stiff or inflamed joints without unnecessary delay. We see patients from Rugby and surrounding areas who want experienced clinical assessment, honest guidance and ultrasound-guided injection treatment focused on the structure actually driving their symptoms.

Our clinicians assess and treat a wide range of areas, including the hip, knee, shoulder, elbow, ankle, foot,  sacroiliac joint, wrist and hand joints. If pain is making it harder to stay active, manage work, sleep comfortably or get through everyday tasks, a targeted injection may help settle the irritated area. Where suitable, a carefully delivered cortisone steroid injection can reduce inflammation, ease symptoms and help you return to rehabilitation with greater confidence.

Ultrasound-guided cortisone injections in Rugby

Patients attending the Joint Care Clinic in Rugby, cortisone steroid injections are carried out within a single appointment that may include assessment, diagnostic ultrasound and treatment where appropriate. Ultrasound imaging allows your clinician to assess the affected area and guide the injection with precision. All treatment at Joint Care Clinics is delivered by HCPC-registered clinicians who are members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Society of Radiographers.

What are Ultrasound Guided Injections?

At Joint Care Clinics Rugby, ultrasound guidance allows treatment to be delivered with a clear view of the tissues involved rather than relying on touch alone. During the procedure, the scan helps your clinician assess the problem area in real time and direct the injection towards the exact joint, tendon, bursa or soft tissue being treated. This can make the appointment feel more reassuring and more specific to your symptoms. Before going ahead, we will discuss the intended effect, possible risks and the aftercare advice you need.

Step 3 : Cortisone Injection

Once the needle is positioned correctly, the cortisone injection is delivered into the joint or soft tissue. Because the medication is placed at the source of symptoms, ultrasound-guided cortisone injections can offer a more targeted approach than non-guided injections.

After the injection, we observe you briefly to make sure you feel well and comfortable before you leave. We answer any final questions, explain aftercare clearly and provide guidance on what to expect over the following days.

Cortisone Steroid Injections FAQs

What is an Ultrasound Guided Steroid Injection?

Ultrasound-guided steroid injections allow medication such as cortisone to be placed into the area that is most likely to be generating your pain. By using live ultrasound imaging during the procedure, your clinician can monitor the needle position in real time and guide treatment accurately to the intended structure while avoiding surrounding tissues. This is particularly useful when the exact placement of the injection is important. Before any treatment goes ahead, we will talk you through the procedure, the likely benefits, possible side effects and any suitable alternatives so you can make an informed decision.

Expert-guided cortisone injection treatments for joint pain in Rugby.

Why should I have a cortisone injection?

A cortisone injection is intended to settle inflammation within a painful joint or irritated soft tissue, which may help reduce swelling, stiffness and discomfort. For many patients attending our Rugby clinic from the local area and nearby Warwickshire towns, this can make day-to-day movement feel easier again. It may also provide a useful opportunity to progress rehabilitation, improve mobility and return to strengthening with less pain. At Joint Care Clinics, every injection is carried out with ultrasound guidance so the treatment can be directed accurately to the area involved.

If you are unsure whether a cortisone injection is right for you, our clinicians can assess your joint with ultrasound and discuss all suitable options at your appointment.

Why do I need ultrasound-guided cortisone injections?

When a cortisone steroid injection is advised, it is often because ongoing inflammation is continuing to drive pain and making progress harder than it should be. Using ultrasound during the procedure allows the medication to be delivered to the intended area with a much clearer level of control, which can be especially valuable in deeper structures or more complex regions such as the hip. Without imaging, injection placement can be less exact. A guided technique helps us treat the area more precisely, avoid unnecessary irritation to surrounding tissues and support the best possible improvement in symptoms.

We also recommend ultrasound-guided injections when the traditional method, also known as blind or anatomical-guided injections, fails to achieve the optimal outcome.

What are the risks and side effects of a cortisone injection?

Most people have a cortisone injection without any serious problems, but every treatment has potential risks and side effects. Common short-term effects can include temporary soreness, a steroid flare, facial flushing, bruising at the injection site or a short rise in blood sugar in patients with diabetes.

Less common risks include skin colour change, fat atrophy or tendon weakening if injections are repeated too often in the same area.

Infection is rare, but it is important to seek urgent medical help if the area becomes hot, swollen or increasingly painful after treatment. We minimise infection risk by using strict hand-washing, skin cleaning and sterile technique for every patient. Your clinician will talk through all relevant side effects and precautions with you before proceeding, so you can make an informed decision.

When might a cortisone injection not be suitable?

There are times when a cortisone injection may need to be delayed or avoided. This can include active infection, recent serious illness, antibiotic treatment for infection, allergy to steroid or local anaesthetic medication, or blood-thinning levels that are too high to proceed safely. It may also not be appropriate if the injection would need to pass through metalwork or if surgery is planned at the same site in the near future. If any of these apply, we will talk you through the safest alternative.

What happens during the steroid injection procedure?

Your appointment will start with a short consultation and, where appropriate, an ultrasound scan to confirm the exact area that needs treating. We will review your medical history, medications and any previous injections, and answer any questions you may have.

Once you are comfortable, the skin over the injection site is cleaned using an antiseptic solution. A small amount of local anaesthetic is usually given first with a fine needle to help numb the area. Under continuous ultrasound guidance, the clinician then guides the injection needle gently into the precise part of the joint or soft tissue that is causing your pain.

You may feel some pressure or a brief, sharp sensation, but most people describe the procedure as quick and very tolerable. After the medication has been injected, the needle is removed, and a small plaster may be applied. If you would like to, you can watch the procedure on the ultrasound screen while we explain what we are doing step by step.

Will my ultrasound-guided steroid injections hurt?

Most patients feel only mild discomfort. To keep any pain to a minimum, we use a local anaesthetic before the injection. This numbs the area and helps make the procedure more comfortable. Our specialist clinicians also use ultrasound guidance to ensure precise needle placement, reducing tissue trauma and improving the overall experience. The entire process is quick, and many people are surprised by how little it hurts.

What happens after the cortisone injection?

If a local anaesthetic is used, the area may feel comfortably numb for up to a couple of hours. As the anaesthetic wears off, the original pain may return, and some people experience a temporary flare-up of discomfort before the steroid begins to work.

Cortisone usually starts to have an effect within 2–3 days, but for some people it can take up to two weeks to notice the full benefit. When the injection is effective, relief can last for several weeks or months; for many joint conditions, this is commonly around 3–5 months, although this varies between individuals and conditions.

We generally advise not having more than three cortisone injections into the same area within a year, to reduce the risk of side effects such as tendon weakening.

Steroid injection aftercare and recovery at home

For the rest of the day after your injection, it is usually best not to drive, as discomfort, numbness or reduced reaction times could affect your safety and may have implications for your motor insurance. Where possible, arrange for someone else to take you home.

For the first 48 hours, try to avoid heavy or high-impact activities that load the injected joint or soft tissue. After that, you can gradually build back up to your normal routine over the next couple of weeks. For weight-bearing joints like the knee, hip or ankle, we usually recommend around two weeks of relative rest before returning to more demanding activities.

If the area feels sore or swollen, you can apply a wrapped ice pack for about 10 minutes at a time, two or three times a day. Continue with your usual pain relief medication, if needed, unless your GP or specialist has advised otherwise.

Do I need a follow-up appointment?

You may have a follow-up appointment with your referrer. In some cases, you may need another injection; if that is the case, you can talk to your referrer about it. We do not recommend administering more than three steroid injections to the same area of the body in a year. If we saw you directly, we would schedule a follow-up appointment for you.

“I am now pain-free after several years of foot and ankle pain, thanks to Ram. I had had steroid injections before by my consultant in the NHS, but these had a limited effect as they were not guided into the right place. Ram uses ultrasound-guided injections so he can get the steroid exactly where it is needed in the joint. He is extremely knowledgeable and very kind.”
