Private Ultrasound Scan FAQs

How should I prepare for the ultrasound examination?

Wear comfortable and loose-fitting clothing, as you need to remove clothing and jewellery in the area to be examined.

If you are expecting to have an injection, make sure you have arranged alternative transport. This is due to your motor insurance policy; it will not be valid for at least 3 hours after the injection. Please check with your insurance policy. Either bring your partner, family member or friend with you. Alternatively, you can use either a taxi or public transport to return home.

No other preparation is required.

How is the Ultrasound scan procedure performed?

Depending on the area to be examined, you will be asked to sit or lie face-up or face-down on an examination table. Then the clinician applies some gel to your skin and places the probe over the gel, and the probe is moved around until the desired images are obtained. The clinician may ask you to move the extremity being examined to obtain images of all the structures of the body part.

Usually, the probe pressure does not cause any discomfort to you. However, you may experience some discomfort or tenderness while scanning over the tender areas.

After completing the ultrasound scanning, the ultrasound gel will be wiped off. Ultrasound gel is a water-based gel and dries quickly without causing stains. After the examination, you can carry out all your daily activities as usual.

Ultrasound examination may take 10–20 minutes to complete and occasionally may take longer.

When will I know the ultrasound examination findings?

We will discuss the results with you after completing the exam, and the signed report will be provided to you at a later time.
Sometimes a follow-up examination or further investigations may be recommended to further evaluate the identified abnormality.
A follow-up ultrasound exam may also be recommended to see if there has been any change in the abnormality over time or to understand the effect of the treatment.

Are there any limitations of Ultrasound Imaging of the Musculoskeletal System?

Ultrasound does not penetrate the bone beyond the bony cortex. For this reason, the joints or bones cannot be visualised. MRI or other imaging modalities are ideal for visualising the internal structure of bones or joints.

The deeper the structure, the poorer the ultrasound image quality; therefore, deeper structures in larger patients may not be seen easily.

What are the benefits vs. risks?

Benefits:

  • Noninvasive (not painful).
  • Sometimes, part of the examination can be uncomfortable, but not painful.
  • Ultrasound is less expensive than the majority of the other imaging methods.
  • No radiation and no known harmful side effects.
  • Ultrasound is a real-time imaging modality, making it a good tool for guiding the injection needle accurately.
  • Patients with metal implants or cardiac pacemakers can safely receive ultrasound imaging.
  • Real-time ultrasound imaging can show the movement of the tendon or joint.

Risks :

  • No known harm to humans.

Darren Gough Cricketer

"Having played professional sport from 1989-2008, I’ve amassed plenty of aches and pains after numerous operations. I’ve been around the world and seen some of the best Doctors and surgeons out there, and Ram has been right up there with his care and skill. Never in a rush, he’s kind, compassionate and very professional. Not only helped me with knee and shoulder pain, but he’s also treated my wife for elbow pain. My son is now going to see him as he’s seen a difference in how his parents are moving. Thanks for all your help, Darren Gough and Anna Gough"

Shoulder Pain Treatment

"Ram is brilliant. If you have shoulder pain, don’t think twice. The Dr wanted me to do 4 weeks of physio without scanning my shoulder because that’s what they have to say before you can get a scan now. I went to see Ram, who diagnosed a full-thickness tear in my rotator cuff and provided a report in just a few days with images, etc for my Dr. This has now expedited the process to triage for surgery. Also had a steroid injection, which has helped to reduce the constant pain I am in. Cannot recommend Ram highly enough" Clare

Ultrasound-Guided Knee Pain Injections

"Consistently excellent service. I have been visiting Joint Care Clinic in Birmingham for a number of years for elbow and knee injections, always with Ram, the owner. He is an absolutely fantastic practitioner; highly skilled, very experienced, down-to-earth, and extremely polite. He explains everything clearly and calmly addresses all and any questions thoroughly.

Ram has a refreshingly ethical approach and is honest about the pros and cons of any treatment. He works to the highest standard. His skill is exceptional; the way he administers injections is effortless, with little to no pain at all. I once saw another practitioner elsewhere, and the experience could not have been more different; with Ram, the process is smooth, comfortable, and over before you know it! Highly skilled and highly recommended. I cannot praise him enough." Rashida

Ultrasound Guided Cortisone Injections

"I had an appointment this morning at the King's Heath, Birmingham Clinic with Ramakrishna. I was very anxious, but I was completely put at ease by this very professional gentleman! He explained everything that was going to happen in great detail. When he was performing the ultrasound, he was explaining everything to me. I then had the cortisone injection, and I can honestly say I didn’t feel a thing. I would highly recommend this clinic. Thank you again." Susan

Ultrasound-Guided Injection

"Ram was quick to make me an appointment. The ultrasound-guided injection was painless and reduced the pain and discomfort. Ram was patient and reassuring throughout the appointment, and I felt very comfortable and at ease. Thank you, Ram." Denise Kirk

Plantar Fasciitis Steroid Injections

"I recently visited Ram, this man is a genius. I have suffered with plantar fasciitis for almost 6 months, and I was given steroid injections, and I have now got instant relief. I would highly recommend anyone with this problem to get an appointment asap. Not only is this man highly knowledgeable and experienced, he’s got a great personality and he’s a genuine guy. " Paul Davis

Frozen Shoulder Pain Injection Treatment

"I would recommend Doctor Ramakrishna, the service, diagnosis and advice regarding my shoulder injury was 2nd to none, he guided me through my options, wrote a report to my doctor, the service was excellent." Michael

Shoulder Pain Steroid Injections

"I visited Ram after seeking a diagnosis from other practitioners. He was very kind and took the time to examine my shoulder. Show me the ultrasound and explain why my shoulder was so painful. He then gave me a steroid injection. which was a remarkably pain-free affair.
After a week, I am considerably more comfortable. He is a caring, sympathetic individual, and I have no hesitancy in recommending him to anyone who wants to know what's wrong and receive advice and therapy. Thank you, Ram."
Patricia

Foot and Ankle Pain Treatment

"I am now pain-free after several years of foot and ankle pain, thanks to Ram. I had had steroid injections before by my consultant in the NHS, but these had a limited effect as they were not guided into the right place. Ram uses ultrasound-guided injections so he can get the steroid exactly where it is needed in the joint. He is extremely knowledgeable and very kind." Debra
