Does it work?

‘Hydro dilatation’ or ‘Hydro distension’, is a special procedure to treat frozen shoulder conditions. Fluid expands the joint capsule and stretches the scar tissue, ligaments and muscles to improve shoulder movement. Steroid is a strong anti-inflammatory medication that helps to reduce shoulder pain. The success rate is over 90% when combined with shoulder exercises following this procedure. If you are struggling with the ‘frozen shoulder’, this is the procedure you do not want to miss. Our patient’s comments about this procedure:

‘it’s a treat’,
‘feels amazing ‘
Thank goodness, the pain I had is gone.

This special injection with shoulder exercises saves you from surgery.

What is a Hydrodilatation injection?

This special procedure for the frozen shoulder is carried out under ultrasound guidance. Local anaesthesia is given just under the skin using a very small needle to numb the skin. Then the needle is guided into the joint space and injected with local anaesthesia, water for injection or NaCl and steroid/Corticosteroid until the joint capsule is stretched or felt pop.

Hydrodistension, hydrodilatation, or high-volume injections are meticulously administered under ultrasound guidance. The goal is to precisely deliver a combination of anti-inflammatory steroids, local anaesthetic, and saline to provide pain relief while intentionally stretching the joint’s lining (joint capsule). This procedure is increasingly employed in the treatment of ‘frozen shoulder’ (adhesive capsulitis) and has demonstrated effectiveness in the majority of patients, offering not only pain relief but also aiding in the restoration of movement.

These injections can swiftly and effectively alleviate pain and reduce inflammation; however, it’s important to note that the improvements are typically temporary. Like any medication, some individuals may experience side effects.

What happens when I recieve a hydrodistension injection?

The clinician overseeing your injection will select the most suitable steroid medication and determine the optimal overall volume dose based on your specific condition and symptoms. Typically, you will be positioned in a reclined posture with the joint exposed for the injection. The clinician, guided by ultrasound, will administer the injection directly into the joint, and the process is generally swift and straightforward.

In some instances, patients may choose to receive a smaller-dose steroid injection immediately following their hydrodistension injection, targeting an area around the joint known as the ‘bursa.’ Research suggests that this supplementary step can yield a significant enhancement in pain relief.

What should I expect after a shoulder injection?

After the injection, you may feel pain-free for a couple of hours due to Local anaesthesia. However, the pain returns after 2 hours, you may even feel more pain for a couple of days due to bruising pain. Usually, you should start feeling better from the third day onwards. Pain relief from the steroid injection may take 1 to 2 weeks.
