Hip Pain Treatment Birmingham
Are you looking for private hip pain treatment in Birmingham? Joint Care Clinics are HCPC-registered and members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. We offer a one-stop clinic for consultation, diagnostic scans and treatment.
Ultrasound helps to visualise the muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, joints and soft tissue of the hip region. Ultrasound uses non-ionising radiation and is deemed safe equipment for any age group, including pregnant women. We use an ultrasound diagnostic scanner to pinpoint the area of pain for a more accurate diagnosis and tailor-made treatment.
We have Joint Care Clinics across the UK where this service is offered by highly experienced clinicians.
Diagnostic Ultrasound around the HIP region can identify:
- Early arthritis changes.
- Muscle or tendon tears.
- Joint effusion.
- Bursitis
- Extra-articular cysts.
What are the limitations of the diagnostic Ultrasound in the hip region?
Like any other joints in the body, ultrasound cannot penetrate the bones or joints of the hip; therefore, intra-articular problems are not visible on an ultrasound scan. Internal structures of the joints require either an MRI or a CT scan.

Common Causes of hip pain
Hip joint arthritis is one of the most common types of joint arthritis in the UK. We perform ultrasound-guided steroid injections to the hip joint for both diagnostic purposes to confirm or exclude the source of pain and for therapeutic purposes to alleviate symptoms.
There are various types of injections used for hip joint symptoms.
Steroid injections are very successful in controlling hip joint symptoms. If you respond to the steroids, you may experience pain relief from 2–3 months to 18 months. This depends on the severity of the problem, lifestyle, and other factors.
One can only administer a certain number of steroid injections to the hip joint in a year.
Viscosupplementation/hyaluronic acid injections/gel injections:
Hyaluronic acid injections are particularly useful for those who are too young to have an operation or need repeated injections. There is no limit on the number of hyaluronic acid injections given to the hip joint. These injections help to enhance joint lubrication and work as shock absorbers. As a result, it slows the progression of arthritis and delays hip surgery and joint replacement.
What affects the OA hip?
- The soft tissue surrounding the joint becomes inflamed.
- Joints and cartilage wear and tear.
- This leads to extra bony growth, called spurs or osteophytes.
Symptoms:
- Groin pain.
- Especially in the morning and after a period of rest, joint stiffness is common.
- Joint pain. Pain is worse with weight-bearing activities, such as walking, running, jogging, swimming, climbing, and daily weight-bearing activities.
- Sometimes you may experience referred pain in the knee joint.
- It is often difficult to cope with hobbies such as gardening, tennis, bowling, cricket, golf, walking, and jogging
The benefits of Ultrasound (US) guided HIP Joint Injection are as follows:
- Cost-effective.
- The hip joint is injected accurately.
- Easily performed in an outpatient clinic.
- Unlike fluoroscopy, ultrasound has no radiation risk.
- Metal implants do not interfere with ultrasound waves.
- If present, joint effusion can be aspirated at the same time as a hip injection.
- Other indications for ultrasound-guided hip joint injection are as follows:
- Femoro-acetabular impingement.
- Paralabral cysts.
- Iliopsoas Bursitis.
There are several bursae around the hip joint. Trochanteric Bursitis is the most common to become inflamed, with ischial bursitis also relatively common; both are diagnosed and treated at Joint Care Clinics.
Trochanteric bursitis develops when the bursa at trouser-pocket level, on the outside of the hip, becomes inflamed. It typically causes pain over the outside of the hip and thigh, discomfort lying on that side, and pain when climbing stairs or getting out of a chair. Common causes include weak hip muscles, a fall onto the side of the hip, overuse, tight surrounding muscles, inflammatory arthritis, and poor posture, including leg length differences. Strengthening and stretching the hip muscles, correcting any leg length difference, and managing your weight can all help prevent it from recurring after treatment.
There are several bursae around the hip joint. Trochanteric bursitis is the most common to become inflamed, with ischial bursitis also relatively common; both are diagnosed and treated at Joint Care Clinics.
Ischial bursitis affects the bursa over the ischium, part of the pelvic bone, and usually worsens with hamstring stretches, climbing stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting on a hard surface. The same preventative steps apply, along with avoiding over-stretching the hamstrings and prolonged sitting where possible.
Our in-house consultation and diagnostic ultrasound can identify tendon quality, tears, fluid, calcific deposits, bony spurs or old trauma, then guide the needle precisely to inject steroid or hyaluronic acid into the trochanteric or ischial bursa. For more on symptoms, causes and treatment, see our dedicated Trochanteric Bursitis Treatment page.

HIP PAIN TREATMENT FAQS
How long does an ultrasound guided injection take?
This will vary depending on the area and other factors, but an assessment, scan & ultrasound-guided injection will generally take around 60 minutes. Ultrasound-guided injection alone is done in a few seconds. Injection alone is carried out in a few seconds.
Are ultrasound guided Hip injections painful?
Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using local anaesthesia using a very fine needle. Ram is experienced and has carried out more than 30,000 ultrasound-guided injections so far. He routinely treats complex patients and patients with needle phobia through the technique he developed through his experience.

What is an ultrasound guided cortisone/Steroid injection?
A cortisone injection is also known as a Corticosteroid injection or steroid injection. This is a strong anti-inflammatory medication that is used for many inflammatory and arthritis conditions to control pain, swelling, stiffness and improve function. Corticosteroid injections are NOT the same used by bodybuilders. Corticosteroid injections do not cause weight gain. To find out more, please visit our ultrasound-guided steroid injections page from the ‘Types of Guided injection’ menu at the top.
Always consider having the steroid injections under ultrasound guidance for accuracy.

What is an ultrasound guided hyaluronic acid (HA) injection?
HA injection is also known as Gel injection or Lubricant injection. This viscosupplementation injection is a natural component of synovial fluid. This tends to increase joint fluid viscosity and restore joint lubrication. Hence, acts as a shock absorber to control the joint /tendon symptoms. Limits further damage to the joint and delays or avoids the need for surgery. Also, helps you enjoy your daily activities or your preferred hobbies. To find out more, please visit our Ultrasound-Guided Hyaluronic Acid Injection page from the ‘Types of Guided injection’ menu at the top.
These injections are very popular, especially for knee joint pain. Any number of injections can be taken in a given period, due to minimal or no side effects from these injections. Usually, a course of 3 Injections is preferred, though some may do well with just one injection per year; we have patients managing with just 1/year.
Can I drive after a hip pain injection?
You will not be able to drive immediately after the procedure. Bring someone with you or use another form of transport to return home. This is mainly due to your driving licence policy, rather than injection efficacy. The majority of motor insurance policies will not allow you to drive for 3-5 hours after the injection with local anaesthesia.

What should I expect after an injection?
After the injection, you may feel pain-free for a couple of hours due to local anaesthesia. However, the pain returns after 2 hours; you may even feel more pain for a couple of days due to bruising pain. Usually, you should start feeling better from the third day onwards. Pain relief from the steroid injection may take 1 to 2 weeks.
How to manage bruising pain after hip pain treatment?
Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using an ice pack (wrapped in a towel to minimise the risk of frostbite from direct skin contact) on the area being treated. Use the ice pack up to 3-4 times a day for 10-15 minutes each time.
Will I always feel 100% pain free?
We can accurately inject the treatment area. However, pain relief depends on several factors, such as the severity of the problem, the body’s response to the steroid injection, the rest period following an injection, rehabilitation, and exposure to risk factors.

What conditions can be treated?
Arthritis, Tendinopathies, Ligament, muscle, and nerve-related problems. We also offer trigger point injections for persistent pain (usually a course of 2-5 is effective).
How long does the ultrasound guided hip injection effect lasts?
It is hard to determine without an assessment. It may be possible to estimate after assessing the patient. Usually, the hip pain injection relief lasts up to 3 months. Many patients benefit for more than a year to 2 years.
