What is Knee Bursitis?
Knee bursitis is the inflammation of the bursae—small, fluid-filled sacs that act as cushions between your bones, tendons, and muscles around the knee.
When these sacs become irritated or swollen, it can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and reduced movement.
Common causes include:
- Repetitive kneeling or bending
- Direct impact or trauma
- Prolonged pressure
- Infection or underlying joint conditions
There are several types of knee bursitis, depending on which bursa is affected. The most common include prepatellar bursitis (in front of the kneecap) and pes anserine bursitis (on the inner side of the knee).

What Causes Knee Bursitis?
Knee Bursitis is often caused by repetitive stress or pressure on the knee joint. This is commonly observed in occupations such as plumbers, carpet/flooring installers, builders and cleaners due to repeated kneeling. Trauma or injury to the knee represents another significant trigger for knee bursitis. Acute injuries, such as falls or direct blows to the knee, can damage the bursae directly, inciting an inflammatory response.
Overuse of the knee during high-impact activities, such as running or jumping, can also precipitate knee bursitis. These activities subject the knee joint to repetitive stress and strain, exacerbating wear and tear on the bursae and surrounding structures.
Underlying medical conditions, including arthritis and gout, can predispose individuals to knee bursitis. In cases of arthritis, chronic inflammation within the knee joint can extend to the surrounding bursae, exacerbating symptoms.

Knee Bursitis FAQS
What Common Symptoms Are Associated With Knee Bursitis?
Knee bursitis is a condition that causes pain and swelling around the knee. Common symptoms include warmth, tenderness, and stiffness, especially when pressing on the area or during movement. Inflammation of the bursa—a small fluid-filled sac—can make it painful to kneel, walk, or bend the knee.
You may notice a visible lump or swelling just below or above the kneecap. This often worsens after physical activity or extended pressure on the joint. Some people also experience a limited range of motion and a sensation of tightness in the knee.
At Joint Care Clinics, we offer ultrasound-guided diagnosis to accurately identify bursitis and targeted knee bursitis treatment options for faster relief.
For more persistent cases, we may recommend:
- Ultrasound-guided aspiration to drain excess fluid
- Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation and relieve pain quickly

How Common Is Knee Bursitis?
Knee bursitis is a common condition, especially among people who put repeated stress on their knees. It affects individuals of all ages but is more frequent in those who kneel often, like gardeners, runners, or manual workers.
The condition occurs when a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) near the knee becomes inflamed. This inflammation is usually caused by repetitive movement, direct pressure, injury, or overuse.
While it’s not usually serious, knee bursitis can lead to persistent pain, swelling, and limited mobility if left untreated. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent it from becoming a long-term issue.
At Joint Care Clinic, our expert clinicians use ultrasound-guided scans to accurately identify bursitis and related conditions. With a clear diagnosis, we create a tailor-made treatment plan—including ultrasound-guided injections—to relieve pain and restore function quickly.
How can Knee Bursitis be treated?
Bursitis is when the fluid-filled sacs (bursa) cushioning the joints become painful and swollen (inflamed). It can usually be treated at home and should go away in a few weeks.
If you have bursitis, to help bring down swelling and pain, you can:
- Rest – Try not to move the joint too much and avoid activities that put pressure on it
- Use ice – gently hold an ice pack (or a bag of frozen peas) wrapped in a tea towel on the area for around 10 minutes at a time and repeat every few hours during the day
- Take painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to ease any pain
Treatments you may have for bursitis include:
- Antibiotics – usually taken for at least 7 days if an infection causes bursitis
- A steroid injection into the affected joint to reduce the swelling – this is not to be done if bursitis is caused by an infection
- Removing fluid – fluid can be aspirated from the joint using a needle to ease symptoms
If bursitis is severe or keeps coming back, the inflamed bursa may need to be surgically drained or even removed (but this is rare).
How long does and ultrasound guided injection for knee bursitis treatment take?
At Joint Care Clinic, an ultrasound-guided injection for knee bursitis is typically quick and efficient. The full appointment—including consultation, diagnostic scan, and injection—usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
The injection itself is very fast. Once the area is assessed and the ultrasound scan pinpoints the exact location, the injection is delivered in just a few seconds.
Our one-stop clinic approach ensures minimal waiting and fast relief, helping you get back to movement without unnecessary delays.
Are ultrasound guided injections painful?
Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using local anaesthesia with a very fine needle. Ram is experienced and has carried out more than 30,000 Ultrasound-guided injections so far. He routinely treats complex patients and patients with needle phobia, using the technique he developed through his experience.
After the injection, you may feel pain-free for a couple of hours due to local anaesthesia. However, pain returns after 2 hours, you may even feel more pain for a couple of days due to bruising pain. Usually, you should start feeling better from the third day onward. Pain relief from the steroid injection may take 1 to 2 weeks.
Discomfort from the needle insertion can be minimised by using an ice pack (wrapped in a towel to minimise the risk of frostbite from direct skin contact) on the area of treatment. Use the ice pack 3-4 times a day for 10-15 minutes each time.

Can I drive after a knee injection?
You will be able to drive immediately after the knee bursitis treatment unless you feel unwell. However, bring someone with you or use another form of transport to return home when possible. If you have driven by yourself and feel unwell following the injection, you have to wait until you are completely recovered before driving.
Patients who have a needle phobia and anxiety-related problems are more prone to feeling unwell following the injections. However, this can be minimised by using various techniques.
How much are private knee bursitis treatment injections?
The cost of knee bursitis treatment, steroid injections may vary depending on the area and how many are required. More than one injection in the same appointment attracts an additional discount.
