Private Diagnostic Ultrasound Scan for a Rotator Cuff Injury in Leicester

A rotator cuff injury can often be diagnosed by physical examination, but an examination alone can’t always tell inflammation from a tear. That’s why your appointment at our Leicester clinic can include a diagnostic ultrasound scan in Leicester, carried out in-house on the day. Because ultrasound shows your tendons in real time, our clinicians can see whether you have rotator cuff tendinitis, a partial tear or a full rotator cuff tendon tear, and how severe it is. We’ll show you the live images and explain them as we go.

A clear diagnosis is what makes a sensible treatment plan possible, and it saves the wait between a scan in one place and treatment in another. Rotator cuff problems can affect any age group, but they’re especially common in manual trades, gym users and anyone whose sport involves repeated overhead movement.

Rotator Cuff Injury or Rotator Cuff Tear?

Your rotator cuff is the group of four muscles and tendons, the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, subscapularis and teres minor, that holds the ball of your shoulder within the joint and lets you lift and rotate your arm. An injury can mean irritated or inflamed tendons. A rotator cuff tear means the tendon fibres themselves are damaged, either gradually through wear or suddenly after a fall or heavy lift. Many people recover with rest and targeted physiotherapy alone. For a fuller explanation of the condition, read our guide to rotator cuff injuries.

Same-Day Rotator Cuff Diagnosis and Treatment in Leicester

Occasionally a tear follows a single injury, and then it’s worth being seen quickly, as surgery may need to be considered. Your scan can also reveal calcification in the supraspinatus tendon, which may need a different approach. Whatever we find, you’ll leave our Leicester clinic with a clear diagnosis, a plan and, where suitable, treatment already under way.

Rotator Cuff Injury Leicester FAQs

What are the symptoms of a rotator cuff injury?

Most people feel pain at the front of the shoulder that spreads down the side of the arm, often worse when lifting or reaching overhead or behind the back. Other signs include weakness, stiffness, crackling when you rotate the shoulder and a dull ache that disturbs sleep on the affected side. A sudden snap with weakness is one of the main shoulder tendon tear symptoms. Stiffness alone can point to frozen shoulder in Leicester instead.

What causes a rotator cuff injury?

Rotator cuff injuries tend to happen in one of two ways. Some follow a sudden event, such as a fall or lifting something heavy, and if a tear happens this way you may notice sudden pain, a snapping sensation and immediate weakness. Others develop gradually as the tendon wears, which becomes more common with age and in jobs or hobbies involving repeated overhead work, lifting, pulling or pushing. At our Leicester clinic we regularly see bricklayers, decorators and carpenters with rotator cuff problems, along with people injured during weight training or sport.

What happens at a rotator cuff appointment in Leicester?

Your appointment at our Holmfield Road clinic starts with a consultation and physical examination, followed by a diagnostic ultrasound scan of your shoulder. We’ll show you the images and explain whether you have a rotator cuff injury, a tear or something else. If an ultrasound-guided injection is appropriate, it can usually be given in the same visit. An assessment, scan and injection together generally take around 60 minutes. You can check our prices for scans and treatment before you book.

How is a rotator cuff injury treated?

Most rotator cuff injuries settle with conservative care: rest, ice, avoiding the movements that aggravate it and a physiotherapy programme to rebuild strength and flexibility. Physiotherapy is a key part of recovery whatever else is involved. If pain is stopping you sleeping, working or doing your exercises, an ultrasound-guided cortisone injection in Leicester may help settle things so rehabilitation can progress, and guiding the needle with ultrasound means it is placed accurately. Larger or traumatic tears may need a surgical opinion. Options include arthroscopic (keyhole) tendon repair, open tendon repair, tendon transfer and, for massive tears, shoulder replacement. If your scan suggests surgery should be considered, we’ll explain why and what to discuss with a surgeon.

Which exercises should I avoid with a rotator cuff injury?

The main exercises to avoid with a rotator cuff injury are heavy lifting and anything overhead, such as overhead pressing or throwing, along with any movement that brings on the pain. Carrying on with repetitive overhead work, or returning to the gym too soon, can make a tear larger, and worsening pain with weakening strength can be a sign that it is. Rest, ice and over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen can ease symptoms meanwhile. Once we’ve scanned your shoulder, we’ll tell you which exercises are safe to start.

How long does a rotator cuff injury take to heal?

With appropriate treatment, a torn rotator cuff can take around four to six months to heal. The exact time depends on how severe the injury is, the treatment you have and your rehabilitation.

Can I drive home after a rotator cuff injection?

Please don’t plan to drive yourself home. Most motor insurance policies won’t cover you to drive for three to five hours after an injection given with local anaesthetic, so this is about your insurance rather than the treatment itself. Bring someone with you to our Leicester clinic or arrange other transport home.

Do you see patients from across Leicestershire?

Yes. Our Leicester clinic sees patients from across Leicestershire, including Market Harborough, as well as Nottingham and Nottinghamshire. Same-day scan and treatment appointments are available, and you can call us on 0333 444 2013 to book.

"Having played professional sport from 1989-2008, I’ve amassed plenty of aches and pains after numerous operations. I’ve been around the world and seen some of the best Doctors and surgeons out there, and Ram has been right up there with his care and skill. Never in a rush, he’s kind, compassionate and very professional. Not only helped me with knee and shoulder pain, but he’s also treated my wife for elbow pain. My son is now going to see him as he’s seen a difference in how his parents are moving. Thanks for all your help, Darren Gough and Anna Gough"
