Trigger Point Injection Birmingham
Private Trigger Point Injection Treatment in Birmingham for Muscle Knots & Myofascial Pain
Private Trigger Point Injection Clinic in Birmingham
A trigger point injection (TPI) can help relieve myofascial pain caused by tight, sensitive bands in muscle (often felt as a muscle knot). Trigger points commonly affect the neck, shoulders, upper back, and lower back, and they can sometimes refer pain into other areas, particularly if the knot is causing pressure on nearby nerves.
Depending on your assessment, Trigger Point Injection therapy here at Joint Care Clinic may involve dry needling or an injection using medication such as a local anaesthetic (and, where clinically appropriate, an anti-inflammatory medicine). Your clinician will explain the options clearly and recommend what’s most suitable for your symptoms.

Trigger points in the back, lower back and neck
Trigger points in the back can feel like deep tenderness or a “hot spot” that flares with certain movements, sitting, or lifting. Lower back trigger points may contribute to persistent tightness that doesn’t settle with rest alone. Trigger points in the neck can cause pain at the base of the skull, across the shoulders, or into the upper back, often described as tension or stiffness that returns quickly after self-massage.
If you’re unsure whether your pain is muscular or joint-related, we can also advise on a diagnostic scan in Birmingham, where appropriate.
Why Choose Joint Care Clinics?
Joint Care Clinics are HCPC-registered and members of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. and the Society of Radiographers. We offer a one-stop clinic for consultation, diagnostic scans and treatment. This service is offered by highly experienced clinicians. We use an ultrasound diagnostic scanner to pinpoint the area of pain, for a more accurate diagnosis and tailor-made treatment.
Common areas we treat with trigger point therapy
Any muscle can develop trigger points, but TPIs more frequently target specific muscle groups, including:
- Neck & shoulder muscles (e.g. trapezius, levator scapulae, sternocleidomastoid)
- Upper back/mid-back trigger points
- Lower back trigger points (often including deep muscles such as the quadratus lumborum)
- Hip/gluteal muscles (e.g. gluteus medius)
- Jaw-related muscle tightness (e.g. masseter/temporalis), where clinically appropriate
If you’re not sure what’s driving your pain, we’ll talk through your symptoms and examine the area to confirm whether trigger point treatment is likely to help.

What to expect during your Trigger Point Injection Treatment
At Joint Care Clinics in Birmingham, every injection is clinician-delivered and ultrasound-guided. Our aim is precision with clear, no-nonsense guidance so you know what will happen, why we recommend each step, and how to get the best from your recovery.
Step 1: The Consultation
We begin with a focused consultation to confirm your diagnosis, understand your symptoms. Your clinician examines the area to confirm whether your pain pattern fits myofascial trigger points (muscle “knots”).
Step 2: Ultrasound Guidance
Where appropriate, we use musculoskeletal ultrasound to visualise the relevant tissues, confirm the target muscle(s) and guide accurate needle placement, especially for deeper muscles or sensitive areas.
Step 3 : Trigger Point Injection
Once the needle is positioned precisely into the trigger point under ultrasound, the clinician delivers the injection. The aim is to reduce muscle tightness and pain, improve movement, and help you return to normal activity more comfortably.
Step 4: Short Observation
You’ll have a brief observation period to ensure you feel well before leaving. You’ll also receive clear aftercare guidance (what to do over the next 24–48 hours), what to expect in terms of soreness, and when to contact us.
"Having played professional sport from 1989-2008, I’ve amassed plenty of aches and pains after numerous operations. I’ve been around the world and seen some of the best Doctors and surgeons out there, and Ram has been right up there with his care and skill. Never in a rush, he’s kind, compassionate and very professional. Not only helped me with knee and shoulder pain, but he’s also treated my wife for elbow pain. My son is now going to see him as he’s seen a difference in how his parents are moving. Thanks for all your help, Darren Gough and Anna Gough"

Trigger Point Injection FAQs
Which medications do trigger point injections use?
Various medications can be used during trigger point injections, including:
- Local Anaesthetic is often used to numb the area and provide immediate pain relief.
- Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory medications that can help reduce inflammation and pain in the affected area.
- Botulinum Toxin is sometimes used to temporarily paralyse the muscle, preventing it from contracting and alleviating pain.
- Dry-needling technique involves inserting a needle into the trigger point without injecting any substances. The needle’s mechanical stimulation can help to relieve the knot.

Which Muscles Do Trigger Point Injections Typically Treat?
Any muscle can develop trigger points, but TPIs more frequently target specific muscle groups.
These include:
Masseter: A muscle in your jaw.
Levator Scapulae: A muscle located on the sides of your neck.
Gluteus Medius: A muscle in your hip.
Quadratus Lumborum: A deep muscle in your lower back.
Trapezius: A muscle that extends over the back of your neck and shoulders.
The sternocleidomastoid: A muscle in the front of your neck.
Temporalis: A muscle on your head.
Trigger points in these muscles can lead to various types of pain and discomfort. For instance, a trigger point in the trapezius muscle may cause tension headaches, while a trigger point in the piriformis muscle (located in the buttocks) can lead to piriformis syndrome, a condition where the muscle presses on the sciatic nerve, causing pain or numbness in the buttocks and down the back of the leg.
What should I expect during my trigger point procedure?
For the trigger point procedure, your consultant will place you in a comfortable position for quick and easy access to the trigger point(s). Initially, we will clean the injection areas; we may need to apply slight pressure to confirm the exact location of the trigger point. The trigger point will then receive an injection of a local anaesthetic and possibly a steroid. You may feel some discomfort, but this should subside quickly. The area will soon feel numb and heavy, but this sensation will gradually ease.
After the procedure, we recommend resting for a few hours before returning to your normal activities. You should feel a decrease in pain immediately, although it can take a few days for the full effect to be noticeable. The steroid component of the injection may take up to 10 days to become fully effective.
Trigger point injections vs dry needling
People often search for dry needling in Birmingham when they’re trying to release a muscle knot. Dry needling uses a fine needle to stimulate the trigger point without injecting medication. A trigger point injection uses a needle to treat the trigger point and may include medication such as a local anaesthetic (and sometimes an anti-inflammatory medicine if appropriate).
Your clinician will recommend the best approach based on your pain pattern, the area involved, and what has (or hasn’t) helped so far.
If you’re specifically looking for dry-needling-style treatment, contact Joint Care Clinic Birmingham.
How long do trigger point injection results last?
Results vary depending on the muscle involved, how long symptoms have been present, and contributing factors (posture, overuse, training load, etc.). Some people notice improvement quickly, while others benefit from a short course of sessions alongside rehab advice.
Are there side effects with trigger point injection therapy?
It’s common to have temporary tenderness or bruising around the treatment site. More significant side effects are uncommon, but your clinician will talk you through relevant risks based on your medical history.
